The Mona Lisa, painted by Leonardo da Vinci between 1503 and 1506, is one of the most famous and studied artworks in history. Housed in the Louvre Museum in Paris, the painting depicts a woman—believed to be Lisa Gherardini, the wife of a Florentine merchant—sitting against a distant, dreamlike landscape. Renowned for her enigmatic smile and the subtle, lifelike modeling of her face, the artwork demonstrates da Vinci’s mastery of sfumato, a technique that blends colors and tones seamlessly to create a soft, smoky effect. Beyond its artistic innovation, the Mona Lisa has captured public imagination for centuries, inspiring countless interpretations, reproductions, and studies on its composition, expression, and symbolism. Its fame is also amplified by historical incidents, such as its 1911 theft, which brought global attention to the painting and solidified its status as an icon of Renaissance art.
