Rilakkuma - McDonald’s Japan (2019)

In Japan in 2019, Rilakkuma — the hugely popular San-X character known for its relaxed teddy bear aesthetic — was featured as a limited-time toy series in McDonald’s Japan’s Happy Set menus, running from April 12, 2019 for about five weeks. This special promotion included a total of nine unique items (eight standard toys plus a “secret” one) that showcased Rilakkuma and friends in themed designs such as “Sports Rilakkuma” and “Honey Forest Rilakkuma,” with the character Chairoikoguma appearing for the first time in this Happy Set lineup. These figures were distributed randomly with Happy Meals and often came with small stationery items like pen toppers, photo frames, or stamps, making them especially popular with children and collectors alike.

Rilakkuma was launched in 2003 and first seen in San-X's four-panel comic series titled Rilakkuma Seikatsu. In Rilakkuma Seikatsu, which describes his origin story, He appears one day in the apartment of a female office worker named Kaoru, who only appears as a silhouette. Rilakkuma spends every day relaxing. The zipper on his back reveals that his appearance is a costume, and his true form is unknown. It is accompanied by other creatures in the series, who also have their own character lines.
