Matryoshka doll, also known as Russian nesting dolls, are a set of wooden dolls of decreasing size placed one inside another, symbolizing family, unity, and continuity. They first appeared in 1890 in Moscow, Russia, inspired by a Japanese nested doll brought to the country. The first Russian set was crafted by woodworker Vasily Zvyozdochkin and painted by artist Sergey Malyutin at the Abramtsevo workshop, a center for Russian folk art revival. The original design depicted a peasant mother holding a rooster, with several children inside her, reflecting traditional Russian rural life. The name “Matryoshka” comes from “Matryona,” a popular Russian female name associated with motherhood and fertility. Since then, Matryoshka dolls have become iconic cultural symbols of Russia, featuring themes ranging from folklore and fairy tales to political leaders and modern pop culture figure.
