Walkalator SM City Manila (November 2025)

A walkalator, also known as a moving walkway or travelator, is a slow-moving conveyor mechanism that transports people horizontally or on a slight incline over short to medium distances, commonly found in airports, shopping malls, and transit stations. The concept of the moving walkway was first introduced at the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893, where it featured a wooden platform that carried passengers around the fairgrounds. The invention was later refined by American engineer J. Henry Atwood, who patented an early version in 1892. Over time, walkalators evolved with modern engineering and safety standards, becoming an essential feature of contemporary infrastructure for enhancing pedestrian mobility and convenience.
