Silica Gel (November 2025)

Silica gel is a moisture-absorbing desiccant made from porous, granular silicon dioxide that helps keep products dry by trapping water vapor inside its tiny internal pores. Although forms of silica gel had been studied earlier, it was American chemist Walter A. Patrick of Johns Hopkins University who patented the modern synthetic silica gel in 1919, originally exploring it for use in gas absorption. Today, silica gel is widely used in packaging for electronics, food, shoes, and medicines to prevent moisture damage, thanks to its high absorption capacity and stability.
