The My Buddy doll by Playskool in 1993 was part of a popular line of soft-bodied companion dolls originally introduced in the late 1980s to encourage imaginative play and emotional bonding for young children, especially boys—an uncommon marketing approach at the time. The 1993 version continued the signature look of a child-sized friend with a soft cloth body, molded vinyl head and limbs, and bright, kid-friendly clothing such as overalls, a striped shirt, and a baseball cap. Designed to be durable and easy to carry, My Buddy was promoted as a “best friend” toy meant to go everywhere with its owner, influencing later pop-culture depictions of child-sized dolls. The line remained a nostalgic favorite and is still remembered for pioneering the concept of a boy-focused companion.
