The 1916 extra-contoured Coca-Cola bottle marked a major evolution in the brand’s packaging, featuring a more pronounced and distinct “contour” shape that became one of the most recognizable designs in the world. Developed by the Root Glass Company of Terre Haute, Indiana, the bottle’s curvy silhouette—with its bulging middle and tapered top and bottom—was inspired by the cocoa pod and intended to make Coca-Cola easily identifiable even in the dark or when broken. This enhanced design replaced earlier straight-sided bottles, setting a new standard for product identity and protection against imitators. The 1916 extra-contoured bottle would go on to symbolize the authenticity and heritage of Coca-Cola, influencing generations of glass and later plastic bottle designs.
