The Christmas Train: A True Story by Thomas S. Monson, illustrated by Dan Burr and published by Shadow Mountain in 2012, is a heartwarming children’s picture book that recounts a cherished Christmas memory from Monson’s own childhood. In the story, young Tommy receives a coveted electric train for Christmas but soon notices a simpler wind-up train set his mother bought for a less fortunate neighbor boy, which includes a beautiful oil tanker car that Tommy longs for. After initially taking that piece for his own, Tommy’s growing sense of guilt leads him to return not only the tanker but an extra car from his own set, teaching him—and readers—a timeless lesson about the joy and spirit of giving over receiving. Dan Burr’s rich, expressive illustrations bring the emotional depth of this true story to life, making it a touching and enduring holiday read for families.
