DC stands for Detective Comics which is the title where Batman first appeared in 1939. The first DC Superhero was Superman, introduced in Action Comics #1 published in 1938, is widely considered the first superhero in modern comics. Batman and Superman once shared a comic in the World's Finest Comics which ran stories featuring them as a team for decades, starting in the 1940s.
