Cheerleading began in the late 19th century at the University of Minnesota in 1898, initially started by a male student leading chants to rally the crowd. The first organized cheer was “Rah, Rah, Rah! Ski-U-Mah! Hooray! Hooray! Varsity! Varsity! Varsity, Minnesota!” — still used by the University of Minnesota today.
