SM started in 1958 as Shoemart by Henry Sy, with its first store in Manila. In the 1960s, Shoemart expanded its shoe store chain in different locations. In 1972, Shoemart turned into a full-line department store. In 1985, the company ventured into the supermarket and home appliance store business.
