The Garfield plushie toy from 1981, produced under license from United Feature Syndicate, reflected the character’s explosive popularity just a few years after his comic strip debut. These early plush toys typically featured Garfield’s bright orange color, black stripes, half-lidded eyes, and rounded, soft body that captured his signature lazy and smug personality. Distributed by various toy and gift manufacturers authorized by United Feature Syndicate, the 1981 Garfield plushie was widely sold in gift shops, department stores, and novelty stores, becoming one of the earliest mass-market stuffed representations of the character. Its success helped launch Garfield as a major merchandising phenomenon of the 1980s, making the plushie a nostalgic collectible today for fans and vintage toy enthusiasts.
