A Jack-o'-lantern is a carved pumpkin, turnip, or other root vegetable traditionally associated with Halloween. The custom originated from an old Irish legend about Stingy Jack, a trickster who outwitted the Devil and was doomed to wander the earth with only a burning coal inside a hollowed-out turnip to light his way. When Irish immigrants brought the tradition to America in the 19th century, they began using pumpkins, which were larger and easier to carve. Today, jack-o'-lanterns are a festive symbol of Halloween, often featuring creative or spooky designs illuminated by candles or LED lights to ward off evil spirits and decorate homes during the season.
