Did you know?
The lookout was usually stationed high up in the crow’s nest, a small platform near the top of the main mast. This gave them a wide vantage point to spot other ships, land, or dangers like storms.Their main job was to watch the horizon and alert the crew about approaching ships, enemy vessels, or obstacles. They’d shout warnings like “Ship ahoy!” to get the crew ready. Lookouts often used spyglasses (early telescopes) to see far distances more clearly. Before those, it was all about sharp eyesight!
